The New UK Global Health Insurance Card

The new UK issued Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) can be used to cover any necessary medical treatment due to either an accident or illness within Europe, it replaces the EHIC card. The GHIC entitles the holder to state-provided medical treatment within the country they are visiting and the service provided will be the same as received by a person covered by the country´s ‘insured’ medical scheme.

Apply Online for the New UK Global Health Insurance Card:

  • Applying Online - Customers utilising this UK GHIC application service can normally expect to receive their card(s) within 10 working days. Prior to forwarding your application to the NHSBSA on the official website our staff will examine your application for errors made during the application process, such as undeliverable addresses and incorrect eligibility ages, for example. A processing fee of £19.95 will be charged to cover administrative and operational expenses. You can also use the NHSBSA website which can be found at www.nhs.uk/ghic to apply for your EHIC. There will be no charge for making your application in this way and you should receive your card(s) within 10 working days.
  • Families - Each family member will need their own GHIC card, however an application can be made at the same time on behalf of your partner and any dependents under the age of 16 years.
  • UK Residents - You do not need to apply for the new UK Global Health Insurance Card if your existing EHIC card is still valid, you will continue to receive the same cover as the new GHIC provides. However once this card has expired you will be able to replace it with the new GHIC.
